Teratozoospermia

Teratozoospermia is a male fertility condition in which a higher-than-normal percentage of sperm have an abnormal shape (morphology). Abnormal sperm may have defects in the head, midpiece, or tail, making it more difficult for them to reach and fertilize an egg. While having some abnormal sperm is common, a significantly low percentage of normally shaped sperm can reduce fertility.

At Usma Infertility Clinic, we offer personalized Ayurvedic treatment combined with modern fertility evaluation to improve sperm health, reproductive wellness, and the chances of natural conception.

What is Teratozoospermia?

Sperm morphology refers to the size and shape of sperm. Healthy sperm typically have an oval-shaped head, a well-defined midpiece, and a long tail that enables efficient movement.

In Teratozoospermia, a large proportion of sperm have structural abnormalities such as:

  • Abnormally shaped head
  • Double head
  • Large or small head
  • Bent or thick neck
  • Defective midpiece
  • Short, coiled, or multiple tails

These abnormalities may reduce the sperm's ability to fertilize an egg.

Symptoms

Teratozoospermia usually does not cause noticeable physical symptoms. It is often detected during a semen analysis when couples experience difficulty conceiving.

Possible signs include:

  • Difficulty achieving pregnancy
  • Male infertility
  • Abnormal semen analysis results
  • History of recurrent IVF or IUI failure (in some cases)
